2011 October: The semester is half over, but we've already done so much. Students flocked to the (almost traditional!) 1st excursion: the Baltimore Aquarium and the Newseum in almost equal numbers. Some students attended the First Year Book talk with Sonny Lacks hosted by Professors Lee Thornton and Stephen Thomas. Alas, our signature trip to Green Bank National Radio Astronomy Observatory was canceled thanks to the first snowstorm of the season (October 29th? Welcome to Global Climate Change!), so we'll be trying to organize a replacement visit in the Spring.

The last excursion planned by the staff (there will be another one planned by our active SDU Student Advisory Board) is November 17th, because that's when the Leonids meteor shower always is. We'll be taking students a few hours outside the light and haze pollution of the DC metro area for better observation, but due to the nature of meteor showers, we'll be leaving campus near midnight and getting back very early in the morning on Friday. Such is the life of astronomer!

SDU

Welcome to SDU!

Incoming SDU Freshmen

Welcome to College Park Scholars! You'll be moving in to a great community-within-a-community in a matter of days and we look forward to seeing you. All the staff will be turning out for Move In Day, Thursday, August 27th from 8-12 to help you get sorted out and made to feel at home in your new home. Your first SDU specific activity will be the very next day, Service Day, where you'll be called on to help out at one of four locations (click the link for more details).

If you have any questions about what your first weekend here might entail, check out New Student Orientation website. There's a strong chance that on Saturday the 29th, SDU will organize a trip over to the College Park Aviation Museum for their 100th Anniversary "Air Fair" celebration, including an air show and carnival atmosphere. After all, it will have been one of our Service Day sites, and we will have helped them set up for this party, so we might as well come to it!

In Memoriam: Ken Joseph

With the rest of the CP Scholars community, we at SDU are mourning the loss of Ken Joseph, a wonderful man who personified the spirit of developing community that is integral to Scholars. The Diamondback has a very nice article about him here. It is hard to think of Scholars without him.

James Keane receives Shapiro award

SDU graduate and current junior James Keane was awarded the Nancy and Ira Shapiro Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research at the Scholars Awards ceremony on October 31. This award goes to the best submitted research for all of Scholars. Chris Caruso and Laura Jenkins recieved the SDU Outstanding Achievement awards, while Charlie Schuster and Matt Adams received the SDU Citizenship awards.
